Background & History

Atlantis Mining (SA) (Pty) Ltd was founded in 1997 by Jimmy and Mark Johnstone.  During the early years Atlantis Mining (SA) (Pty) Ltd was primarily involved in the Hire of Equipment to the Mining Industry and in Opencast Mining and as it grew, progressed to larger scale OPENCAST MINING and to BULK EARTH MOVING. The Mining operations undertaken include topsoil removal, drilling and blasting, overburden and coal removal and rehabilitation.

Currently, Atlantis Mining offers the following primary services:


• Contract Opencast Mining in South Africa.

• Mine rehabilitation and re-instatement.

• Bulk earthmoving for mining projects.


The company's earlier operations in the late 1990's consisted of Opencast Mining of Lemoenfontein Colliery for Ferguson Tolmay Coal. During the year 2000, Atlantis Mining was awarded and commenced the Mining of  Kopermyn Colliery for Sumo Coal, a Turkish company.  Atlantis Mining produced coal at 85 000 tons per month.  The total reserve was "6 million tons".


During 2002 Atlantis Mining began mining Elcoal Colliery for William Ferguson. Elcoal was a "12 million ton" reserve which saw production targets start at "50 000 tons" per month in 2003 and grow continuously until Atlantis Mining was producing an average of "250 000 tons" per month.


Atlantis Mining has also mined for Umcebo Mining at their Kleinfontein Colliery for 28 months producing "100 000 tons" per month.


During the period 1998 until 2007 Atlantis Mining mined various mini pits for Woestalleen Colliery. These mini pits included Kanhym 7, Woestalleen 2 & 5, Kromdraai, Noodhulp and Sterkwater.


Since the Nucoal (Pty) Ltd takeover of Woestalleen Colliery, Atlantis Mining has until recently been involved in the mining of the Klipbank Reserve, producing on average "110 000 tons" per month. The Overburden removal has been in the order of
"480 000 m³" per month.


During 2007 it was decided to restructure Atlantis Mining’s ownership structure in order to facilitate compliance with the emerging B-BBEE codes at the time.  Atlantis Mining is currently a LEVEL 3 Contributor to B-BBEE and at present, a significant portion of the business is owned by a B-BBEE Partner.

During July 2008 Atlantis Mining started the Vuna Colliery Project for Coal of Africa. A total of "21,3 million" tons has been mined with a total of "36,75 million m³" of overburden being moved. Monthly production was "300 000 tons" with approximately "900 000 m³" of overburden being moved per month.


Atlantis Mining also mined for Bisichi Mining at Blackwattle Colliery. This operation comprised the mining of numerous mini pits. Production was 120 000 tons per month with approximately "600 000 m³" of overburden being moved per month.


In January 2013 the Elandspruit Colliery commenced for IPC (Pty) Ltd, with production of "60 000 tons" per month at a stripping ratio of 3,2:1 and approximately "310 000 m³"  of overburden being moved per month


During 2014, Atlantis Mining was awarded the contract of mining for Vuna Mining Enterprises (Pty) Ltd at Vaalbult. Monthly production is expected to be "70 000 tons" per month at a stripping ratio of 3,5:1 with approximately "388 000 m³" of overburden being moved per month.


In June 2014, Atlantis Mining was also awarded the contract for mining at Klipfontein Colliery for Bisichi Mining.  Monthly production is expected to be “100 000 tons” per month at a stripping ratio of 2,2:1 with approximately “330 000 m³" of overburden being moved per month.


Currently, Atlantis Mining continues mining operations at Vaalbult Colliery, Blackwattle Colliery and Rietfontein Colliery.  Rietfontein Colliery (Yandisa Mining) is the latest contract secured by Atlantis Mining in 2016.


Atlantis Mining has the potential to expand, and should the opportunities arise, the current management team is willing to do so. The company is continually tendering on mining jobs in the Mpumulanga and surrounding areas.
